Brands are required to stop advertising on YouTube clips with bad content

The Ministry of Information and Communications has just officially asked brands to stop advertising on clips with malicious, reactionary, and illegal content on YouTube.

According to the Department of Broadcasting and Electronics Information under the Ministry of Information and Communications, the status of advertising products and services of many domestic and foreign enterprises appears on videos with bad, reactionary content and violating Vietnamese laws at YouTube have been discovered since early 2017.

The status quo of brand advertisements on YouTube

However, recently, the Department of High School and Center for Foreign Affairs discovered that situation appeared on the YouTube platform remains a lot and tends to increase. Along with that, advertisements of some big brands reappeared, being assigned to bad and reactionary clips.

Specifically, advertising of many big brands like Adayroi of Vingroup, Samsung Vietnam, Grab, FPT, Sun Group, Yamaha, Shopee … appeared on clips violating Vietnamese laws.

On June 10, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism officially sent a letter to the above enterprises. The letter demanded brands to stop advertising in bad and bad content videos on YouTube. The Department also requires businesses to report explanations about this situation.

According to the Ministry of Information and Communications, the online advertising market in Vietnam is worth about 400 million USD. More than 70% of this revenue goes to Facebook and Google (about 280 million USD).

The action from the Ministry

Therefore, it is necessary to ask YouTube to open a representative office or branch in Vietnam. First of all, to take care of customers, then work with management agencies when required.

The ministry will also ask YouTube to identify Vietnamese YouTube channels. Then, only consider sharing advertising money with identified channels and committing not to publish illegal content.

The Ministry of Information and Communication is also working closely with the State Bank and authorities to manage advertising cash flow on YouTube and Google. Even, blocking cash flow if Google does not cooperate.

The Ministry also requires YouTube to remove suggestive features for channels that announced to violate. In addition, add mechanisms to prevent users from re-posting the previously removed violation clips. And, continuing to coordinate with the Ministry to prevent, remove clips, and violation channels.
